WCNY Blog Post #1: American Graduate Day 2017

American Graduate Day 2017

By Nico Basile

WCNY-TV presented American Graduate Day on Oct. 14. American Graduate Day highlighted the inspiring organizations/individuals that help students graduate from high school and focus their attention onto the next chapter of their lives. The day is dedicated to those individuals who have created a passion for achieving success in young students everywhere.

The broadcast focused on telling compelling stories of actual cases where students have grown to be successful through the help of others and eventually earning their high school diploma. WCNY-TV has shown this event since 2012, and it has helped communities come together and spread awareness of these great stories to show that anything is possible. Graduation rate is now at an all time high, so now the attention of the broadcast will spread beyond just high school but will also include; career paths, workforce trends, and skills needed to thrive in society.

For the first time since the first airing of American Graduate Day, the broadcast focused on more than just the beginning of young people’s careers. Instead, there was a shift of focus towards post-secondary pathways to career success that range from traditional universities to job training. The spotlight was on those individuals and organizations that have altered peoples paths to success in a positive manner and have helped change people’s lives. Sr. Director of Education and Community Engagement, Debbie Steck, had this to share about why WCNY-TV will broadcast the event. “Sharing local stories of individuals and companies helping Central New York students achieve both academic and life success is a natural fit for WCNY.”

American Graduate Day featured many notable people including, General and Mrs. Colin Powell, John Legend, Misty Copeland, Phil Mickelson, Bill Moyers, Daymond John, Juju Chang, Jane Pauley, Marcus Samuelsson and others too.

Getting Involved

Getting Involved

By Luke Lawn

The seasons are changing from fall to winter in New York State. The weather starts to cool and thoughts of snow approach, but the community remains active! WCNY has adopted the spirit of fall and has plenty of shows and community events hosted before the weather gets too cold. It is truly an exciting time of year as the holiday season approaches.

Halloween takes place next week and there are plenty of holiday activities for community members to enjoy. WCNY is hosting Halloween themed TV broadcasts for the week prior to Oct. 31. This includes a new showing of a Curious George one-hour special on Oct. 28 as well as the Oct. 31 at 8 a.m.! There is also a broadcast of Arthur and the haunted tree house Oct. 25 at 6:30 a.m. These programs will air on WCNY, along with many other holiday themed shows.

I believe that it is important for the community, young and old, to show their support of the holiday spirit and take part in the festivities. Syracuse University engages the community by bringing children to dorms to trick or treat. I participated for the two years I lived in dorms and believe that it is a great opportunity for students and the children alike. The children get to see what Syracuse University is like first-hand and also get to leave with bag fulls of candy! The students get to be involved in an event that gives back to the community that has been our home.

As the leaves continue to fall, be sure to check out how you can get yourself involved by visiting the WCNY website. Here you can find more information about current events and a full television schedule to checkout programs that you can watch.

My Introduction

Hello Everyone,

I am recent transfer from Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) in New York City with an Associate’s Degree, majoring in Communications with a concentration in Broadcast Journalism. I am a Junior, double majoring in Writing & Rhetoric and Communication & Rhetorical Studies. My experience in journalism, writing, and communications proves serving to this project due to other works not only inside of the classroom, but outside of the classroom.

For two summer’s I worked at a Public Relations firm in which I learned how to work and write at a professional level. I also learned how to deal with public life, how to create exposure for a client, how to network, and how to create a clientele. In my three years of college I have learned many different versions of writing both short and long. My knowledge ranges from business communication to public speaking, intercultural communication, conflict resolution, marketing, etc. This semester I am taking a class where I am learning how to code, create a website, along with making apps functional for common usage. My courses, apply directly to our project and possible future endeavors at WCNY. My role can be very diverse and flexible considering my experience ranging from editor to mediator.

In my time serving the community, I have served meals to the poor in soup kitchens, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Breast Cancer Walk with my previous college. I was also a Senator in Student Government involved in Academic Senate and many other activities that represented BMCC as a whole on behalf of the students. I prefer any type of leadership role most times I find myself to be the leader or on equal standing with everyone in the group as team players. I approach everyone with respect, a smile, and an open ear for understanding.

I am dedicated to not only to my group, but to WCNY as well. I am passionate about bringing our group together and achieving great work that will leave an impression on WCNY. It is my duty to strive for the best whilst motivating my team and others around us do the very best. I believe that we can accomplish our work combining our many versatilities together to make a great team.

Sincerely,

Brianna Johannes

WCNY Blog Post #2: The 46ers Premiere Party

The 46ers Premiere Party

By Nico Basile

On Nov. 8 from 5-7 p.m. ,WCNY will be hosting a Premiere Party for The 46ers. The documentary captures those who create life experiences from scaling the 46 Adirondack Mountain High Peaks in New York state. Men and women who are part of the Adirondack 46ers club will be introduced and the impact of their experiences will be told. Being a member of this club involves being a part of a group that supports hiking high peaks both in the winter and the summer in various locations.

Stories shared from the documentary include the tales of multiple individuals who set out to move through the mountains at both gentle and intense paces. These experiences create memories that last a lifetime and translate to each individuals overall success as a person. Director Blake Cortright drew inspiration for the making of the film based off of the individuals perseverance in attempting these journeys regardless of the life threatening risk of climbing such heights. The film will document the travels of individuals going through 19 different High Peaks highlighting the positive and negatives that come with the experience. Some of these individuals have climbed the highest peaks in New York State up to 700 times.

The event will begin with a welcome and light hors d’oeuvres served from 5-5:30 p.m. , followed by a Q&A and meeting the producers from 5:30-6 p.m. Finally The 46ers premiere will take place at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 for WCNY members and $25 for non-members. RSVP will be open until Nov. 5 and can be done on the WCNY website at wcny.org/events or by calling (315) 453-2424. We are expecting a lot of people to attend so please do not forget to RSVP.
