Get ready for Season 13 of ‘Double Down’

Are you ready to feel disappointed with your intelligence? Are you ready to be out-smarted, out-worked, and out-trained? Well, you’re about to face the hardest test of your life on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. — except, you’ll be behind the cameras.

Tune into WCNY to watch the season premiere of the new high school game show Double Down where  students will face challenging questions covering a wide array of topics. From science and math to literature and current event topics, these smart versatile students will get to show the world how much we, the viewers, really don’t know. Tune in to find out if your 5th grade teacher really gave you a life time supply of knowledge.

The competition will be broken down into teams of three where the students will compete for prizes, but as we all know, the real prize are the bragging rights that come along with winning. We all know that feeling of walking into class on Monday with something to brag about during the five minutes before the teacher starts class. The buzz is alive in the classroom as all your friends, and your crush sitting in the corner, turn their attention towards you for the rest of the day. This is a chance for these students to feel the glory of putting their handwork to use in front of their friends, family, and, oh yeah, the endless amount of world wide viewers.

The upcoming vote on a convention

As fall commences in upstate New York, voters are starting to look forward to the upcoming general election in November. While there are no seats up for re-election, the election is not one to be overlooked! This general election is particularly exciting because it will include a ballot that New York natives see only once every 20 years.

New York is one of 14 states in the United States that allows voters the opportunity to rewrite their governmental blueprint in an open convention. In order for this convention to be held, there is a vote held every 20 years. This vote will occur on Nov. 7, 2017 during the course of the general election.

WCNY will be hosting a Town Hall meeting at their headquarters on the Near Westside in Syracuse, NY to educate New Yorkers about the state constitutional convention. Many Syracuse University students will be in attendance to participate in the live, televised event. New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) is working with WCNY to run this event. These organizations have offered the opportunity for Syracuse students to participate as audience members in this historic, televised event.

There has been lots of public debate about which side voters should take when filling out their ballots. The last time the constitutional convention was held was in 1967. If there is a statewide vote for “Yes” a convention would be scheduled for 2019. The convention would consist entirely of elected officials from state senate districts. These individuals would be elected next year and anyone legally living as a New York resident can run as a delegate.

Nico Basile

My name is Nico Basile, I am from Los Angeles, CA and am a Sport Management major. I will be working on the website project for WCNY, which was one of my top choices because of my heavy interest in creating attractive, content filled websites. Currently, I am in a Sport Technology class and have been reviewing strategies on what makes an effective website.

In the past, I interned as a sales representative for a men’s clothing company where I would attempt to spark sales through social media accounts and the company website. In-order to maximize sales, it was important to have an effective website where it was easy for the consumer to purchase clothing and stay informed by the company. By shadowing my experienced sales representatives during the internship, I learned that it is important to have a website that catches the reader’s attention while also being simple enough to understand. Additionally, the website should be filled with a good amount of content that obtains a good balance of pictures and writing. I’m here to help with CONTENT!

Currently I am the Community Service Chair for my fraternity this semester. The American Red Cross is where I have volunteered previously and I plan on continuing to complete more hours of service through blood drives and fundraising for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Lastly, I prefer working in a group setting because of my prior experiences being a part of a team and understanding that it takes an equal distribution of hard work between each member to succeed. If one person slacks off, the whole team is affected and I could promise you that I will give my best effort to do the best I possibly can on the project.

Luke Lawn

My name is Luke Lawn and I am currently a senior in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. My course of study is Information Management and Technology and I have a minor in global enterprise technologies. I am very excited to be working with WCNY throughout the course of this semester. I am working with a project team of three other students at Syracuse to produce new content for the WCNY website. Our goal is to actively engage the community through fun and frequent events in the area.

This summer I worked for a Pharmaceutical Service company in Exton, PA. While I was there, I had the opportunity to take a week of my internship and dedicate it to community service. I assisted a local food shelter move their entire operation to a new location. This included hundreds of thousands of pounds of food products, business materials, shelving and more. I also assisted with updating their website content. I enjoy giving back to the community and will look to work for companies who also value giving back to their communities.

I am passionate about technology and how it can be used to better our world. One of the reasons I am so excited to be working with WCNY is their utilization of many forms of technology. Education is the basis for a strong society. I have been fortunate enough to have access to spectacular educational facilities throughout my life and I look forward to promoting the education of others through community engagement.
